Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration that is beset by numerous issues, including the president's role as its own communication director and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp never wavered from her focus, and worked closely to work closely with White House policy and political teams. The focus has been on matters such as school safety, opioids, infrastructure, and trade. Her current work doesn't have any contact with journalists. In March, her name was floated to be a possible person who could replace Hope Hicks at the Communications Director post. It was a tense battle. Schlapp has sided with Tony Sayegh who was also an aspirant. They began sparring in media. Schlapp confronted Sayegh following The Washington Examiner printed a bad report about the former president.
